Bus Lane Enforcement (BLE) Program
Overview
Status
Metro is implementing front-facing cameras on buses equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to identify vehicles parked in bus lanes and at bus stops. When a parking violation is detected, the system generates an evidence package that includes a brief video of the violation, a photograph of the vehicles license plate, and the exact time and location of the incident. This evidence package is the sole data recorded by the camera system. After documentation, the information is forwarded to LADOT for human review, and a citation is then issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Starting November 1st, vehicles parked in bus lanes or at bus stops along Metro routes 212 and 720 will receive warning notices by mail. Citations will be issued starting on February 17th. Information on low-income payment options is available at https://ladotparking.org/adjudication-division/pay-a-citation/
Per California Vehicle Code §40240, §40240.5, and §40241 public transit agencies are authorized to implement programs that collect video images of parking violations in bus lanes and zones and partner with local jurisdictions to issue and adjudicate parking citations. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) initiated the Bus Lane Enforcement (BLE) program and partnered with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to issue and adjudicate parking violations within the City of Los Angeles. Those found in violation will be issued a citation via mail, which will contain information on how to pay for or contest the citation.
